Enga Governor Concerned over Shortfall in Secondary Teachers

by Jack Lapauve Jr, EMTV – Port Moresby

Enga Governor, Sir Peter Ipatas, is concerned about the country’s shortfall of teachers in secondary schools.

The Enga Governor’said the country must empower institutions in raising the number of qualified academics in the subjects of language and literature, math and science.

The Enga Governor expressed that despite a growing number of teacher colleges and universities in the country, there is a shortfall in the number of highly qualified teachers in schools around the country.

“Not only Enga has experienced that, it’s all around the country”, Governor Ipatas said.

Governor Ipatas mentioned that from Enga’s experience, PNG needs qualified nationals.

“We have to minimise this huge gap”, Ipatas added.

Higher National News Science and Research Minister, Malakai Tabar, said the Government is working towards building and empowering academics through studies which will see qualified teachers not only at university level but secondary as well.

Minister Tabar said the Higher National News department has reviewed working mechanisms to improve the ratio of students dropping out of school after completing year 12.

Governor Ipatas expressed these while receiving K3million from Higher National News Minister Malakai Tabar for a new Technical College in Enga.
