Papua New Guineais on an economic mission to establish bilateral relations by partnering with growing economies in Asia.
After winningthe bid in Beli to hostthe 2018 APEC meeting, Prime Minister Peter O'Neill announced yesterday that Papua New Guineais now working at becoming an ASEAN member country.
PNG’s next bilateral destinations are Vietnam and Thailand.
The Prime Ministersaidthe National Government is extendingthe country’s perimeters intothe emerging economies inthe Asian Region.
“We are now specifically targeting large scale agricultural development which can be a feeder for our own people to participate in. Our agriculture production has decline and we have to lift it up; firstly, to feed ourselves, andthen look at feedingthe rest ofthe world,” said O’Neill.
The Prime Ministersaidthe discussions were on hoPNG can adopt best agricultural practices amongst ther resource sectors from this two emerging economies.
He said to strenthenthese ties; two embassies will be establishedthere.
This will qualify Papua New Guineato becoming a member ofthe Association of South East Asian Nation’s or ASEAN.
“Why this is necessary is because it will support our application to be a member ofthe ASEAN Organisation withinthe South East Asian Region, and be among regions withthe fastest growing economies inthe world,” said O’Neill.
“We need to be part of itoas it is strategically important to us asthe biggest country inthe Pacific. We have to be meaningfully engaged withthem so that ther Pacific Islands can havethe opportunity engage in Trade andInvestment,” he said.
