Southern Highlands: Liquor Ban Extended

Members ofthe Southern Highlands Provincial Assembly earlier this month agreed to extendthe liquor ban inthe province.

One million kina was allocated inthe 2014 provincial budget to implement this ban.

 

Members ofthe assembly agreed that alcohol was causing a lot of problems in communities and should be completely banned inthe province.

 

The province already has a liquor ban policy in place, and members agreed to futher strenthen this policy by extendingthe ban.

 

Governor of Southern Highlands Province, William Powi, said liquor hadthe potential to destroythe province and he welcomedthe members call to extendthe ban.

 

He however called on lLeadersto take responsibility to fully implement this policy. He saidthe 2014 budget has catered for this with K1 million allocated.

 

Members of parliament fromthe province also supportedthe call. Member for Kagua Erave, James Lagea, raised concerns of police personnel’s involvement inthe illegal transportation and trade of liquor inthe province.

 

A liquor committee has been established to come up with plans on how bestthey can implementthe policy.
