PNG Power says chronic blackouts will be reduced in Lae City and Madang including parts ofthe Highlands when a new hydro powered station in Yonki comes into full operation.
The new facility will supply an additional 18 megawatts of power tothe Ramu grid that will cater tothe growth in Lae City andthe up-coming Wafi- Gold Project.
PNG power’s yonki dam is being developed into a modern hydro power station with facilities to add 18 megawatts tothe Ramu power grid when in full operation.
A Japanese civil construction company was tasked for the building ofthe new facility and has completedthe project.
PNG Power saysthe new facilities have been developed to cater for the economic boom in Lae City includingthe upcoming Wafi-Gold mining project.
“We have this new facility to supply power tothe Ramu grid…but some blackouts are caused by faults alongthe lines,” sain PNG Power General Manager, Watson Naso.
People living in Morobe province and Madang including parts ofthe highlands region have been experiencing continuous blackouts.
The company that celebrated 50 years this year saysthe number of blackouts will be reduced.
PNG Power wants to be seen as an environmentally conscious company.
It has expressed thatthe People will benefit fromthe station that is more environmental friendy and reliable.
The Yonki facility is in vast contrast tothe old diesel engine generators.
“The facilities is more environmental friendy, it will take some burden offthethermo-stations…consideringthe climate issues,” said Naso.
The company is now looking into a more renewable source of energy to cut back on fuel costs that make up a significant portion oftheir expenses.
