Tetanus vaccination campaign underway

The Prevent Tetanus vaccination campaign for 2013 has been underway a little over a week now.

The campaign targets women and girls betweenthe ages of 15 and 45, and children belowthe age of five.

The Gerehu St John’s Hospital in Port Moresby is providingthe Tetanus Toxoid vaccination for the campaign that is effective until July 26th.

The Tetanus prevention program was rolled out on June 17th 2013.

The exercise involves injecting women betweenthe ages of 15 and 45 with a tetanus toxoid vaccine to protectthe unborn baby if and whenthese women become pregnant.

The program also covers pregnant women and children belowthe age of five.

Officer in charge of St John’s Hospital Sister Rachel Kurup saidthey startedthe program on Monday 24th June.

Today,they begantheir mobile visits to locations withinthe Moresby North West Electorate.

Standing officer ofthe TT vaccine clinic at St John’s Stanley Lapan saidthey have vaccinated 120 women betweenthe required ages, and over 60 children’since last week.

He saidthe women and children came from within NCD, Central and as far as Gulf province.

Apart fromthe TT injection, women were given a worm treatment called Albendazole. Chidlren were given Saving Oral Drops for Polio, as well as Vitamin A capsules to help withtheir vision.

Sr Kurup called on more women to come withtheir young children to getthe treated.
