A woman in Central Province has been giving abused children a second chance in life.
Violence against Children is a growing problem aroundthe world and Founder for ‘Womenof Hope’ Veronica Charlie is silently doing her bit to breakthe cycle.
She is appealing tothe government to collectively deal with this issue by partnership with organizations such as hers to address this.
According tothe United NationsChildren Fund or UNICEF, it is often unseen, unheard and under-reported.
UNICEF recently launched a global effort to end this problem, urging governments aroundthe world to take an active stand on this issue.
Thus, Veronica Charlie is doing just that by taking children offthe streets and into her care centre in Pari Village outside Port Moresby.
Most ofthem are HIV Orphans, violently abused bytheir parents and guardians.
So far she has enrolled ten children atthe Pari Primary School; one ofthem is 8 year old Kylie Andrews who is in grade two.
“She enrolled me in school and I’m happy here,” said little Kylie.
Statistics onthe extent of violence against children are limited but according totheWorld Health Organization some 150 million girls and 73 million boys under 18 years experienced sexual violence and exploitation.
TheInternational Labour Organisation also reports that an estimated 1.2 million children are trafficked every year.
A baseline study is currently being carrlied out by UNICEF to establishthe extent of violence against children in Papua New Guinea
This study is part of a global initiative thatthe national government committed to in 2009.
