Frustrated Lae residents broke water pipes to get water

Frustrated residents of Tent City in Lae have begun breaking water pipes to get water after six months of continuous disruptions.

So far, WaterPNG has not yet given an official explanation on water disruptions since September last year.

Three fire hydrants were broken last week by frustrated Bemayong residents in Lae City.

They’re collecting drinking water fromthe source, as well as water for cooking and washing.

Forthe past six monthsthey have continuous water disruptions andthere has been no official explanation as to why water is being turned off.

Most women and children have been fetching much needed water from a drain nearthe Besu River.

Water fromthe hydrant is unsafe;the number of children falling sick because of dirty water has increased dramatically.

Workers atthe Tent City health center say cases of diarrhea and ther water related illnesses have risen inthe past six months.

Community lLeadershave written tothe government’seeking assistance but so farthere hasn’t been any response from WaterPNG.
