Call For Government To Support Fishing Project in Vanimo

The people of Amanab inthe Vanimo Green electorate, are calling onthe National Government to support and fund fishing and cannery project.

 

The project is a community initiative by landowners after seeing that no tangible development has taken place withthe current logging activities happening for the past ten years.

That is whythe people of Amanab have regrouped and formedthe Paradise Tuna Corporation, and to venture into tuna loining project.

 

Chairman ofthe business attorney Kevin Muriki saidthe people have pulled out over 200 thousand kina fromtheir timber levies to supportthe project.

 

 “Sincethe initial state till now,there has been no support from Provincial and national Government…so we’re askingthe Hon. Prime Minister Peter O’Neill to give your backing on this project by giving us financial support,” he said.
 

Muriki added thatthe project is in feasibility stage and Prime Minister’s involvement in funding would be an advantage.

 

Project Consultant Paul Piru saidthe National Fisheries Authority have been supportive in holding meetings with landowners.

 

He said 100 million kina will be needed to completethe feasibility studies.

 

Mr Piru added that landowners wantthe national Government to releasethe K36 million parked withthe Forest Authority as Logging Export Development Levy to helpthe project.

 

The project involves downstream processing of tuna with major business prospects forLandowners, Provincial and National Government.
