IRC Facing Staffing Constraints Due to No Accommodation

Commissioner General forInternal Revenue Commission, Betty Palaso, today admitted thatthey have staffing constraints due to no accommodation.

She said this duringthe Public Accounts Committee (PAC) inquiry on Money Laundering.

PAC Chairman John Hickey questioned ifthe IRC have sufficient trained and expert staff to fulfillthe state obligations to be able to prosecute.

Ms. Palaso repllied that more experienced lawyers are needed to conduct prosecution as currently; accommodation is a serious issue to attract and retain skilled employees for their department.

She also said thatthey have no expert training for the employees to do more investigations.

Mr. Hickey responded that accommodation should be fundamental, andthe best way is to offer a reasonable allowance to attract lawyers fromthe private sector.

However, Ms. Palaso saidthey cannot afford to provide a reasonable housing allowance to expert lawyers from private sectors, asthey already have access to such.

Ms. Palaso confirmed that more trained personnel are needed in IRC.
