Public View On Asylum Seekers

The public has expressed concern overthe Asylum seeker issue. Much ofthe views onthe street  were in opposition tothe arrangement.

The public has voiced its concern thaPNG has become somewhat of a dumping-ground for Australia on its Asylum Seeker issue.

 

The announcement that Australia will givPNG direct assistance worth millions of kina for taking onthe refugees has not impressed a good cross section ofthe community.

 

Those who we spoke to expressed concern about wherethe refugees will be placed, andthe social & economic effects that will follow.

Oppositionstrongman & member for Kundiawa Gembogl Tobias Kulang spoke out overthe weekend; he expressed shock that a major foreign policy with immense socio-political & economic implication was shoverd dowPNG’s throat without much scrutiny.

 

Today, Prime Minister Peter O’Neill was firm thatthe asylum seeker agreement was not a new deal but a follow on from where past governments left off.
