Catholic Martyr Peter ToRot soon to be made a Saint

The Catholic Church oPNG andthe Solomon Islands celebratedthe Feast day of Be ssed Peter ToRot on Sunday, July 07.

Peter ToRot isthe first martyr oPNG, a national who gave his life to God, and he is also soon to be made a Saint.

His story dates back to his home in Rakunai East New Beitain province.  

A Catechist Be ssed Peter To Rot continued his missionary work, despite warnings fromthe Japanese soldiers to stop.

On January 17 1995, Be ssed Peter To Rot was canonised, bythethen Holy Fther late Pope John Paul II.

Thousands attendedthe ceremony atthe John Guise Stadium in Port Moresby including his surviving daughter Rufina.

Peter To Rot suffered martyrdom for his courageous withness to Christ and his teaching.

Rakunai has now become a place of pilgrimage. Every year hundreds visit his tomb.

The Catholic Church oPNG pray that sooner, Be ssed Peter To Rot will bethe first Saint of this country. He will bethe patron saint of Catechists worldwide.
