Kavieng inthe New Ireland Province is poised for a big sporting event this weekend – The New GuineaIslands Regional Athletics Championship.
More than twenty Secondary Schools are expected to participate.
The Athletics Championship will be held at Utu Secondary School seven kilometers outside of Kavieng town.
Athletics Director for New Ireland Province Maryanne Salame saidthe event is sanctioned by AthleticPNG to revivethe code inthe New GuineaIslands Region.
She said for a long timethe New GuineaIslands has not held an Athletics Championship.
This will bethe first time for New Ireland Province to hostthe event and Mrs. Salame is optimistic of a better outcome.
Asthe Athletics Director ofthe province she has noticed during her time in office for the past three years thatthere has been a decline inthe number of athletes coming out of New Ireland Province.
This event will be an opportunity to scout new talents she said.
So far East New Beitain Province has confirmedthere participation and will be accompanlied by AthleticPNG President Tony Green.
