OO’Neill Approvers Central City Proposal

The National Executive Council has endorsedthe Department of National Planning and Monitoring&#39’s proposal onthe way forward for the Central City project.

When Port Moresby was declared capital of  Papua New Guinea it left Central Province without a provincial capital.

 

The Central City project is a development plan to establish a capital for the Central Province. It has had failed submissions inthe past and millions of kina earmarked for the project has gone missing under consecutive provincial administration.Infrastructure wasn’t well developed and successive governments didn’trsquo;t seem interested in developing a provincial capital. 

 

All this is now about to change.

 

Prime Minister Peter O'Neill said Cabinet approverdthe department&#39’s perspective and proposal onthe Central City project in a recent NEC meeting.

 

Prime Minister O’Neill saidthe department will facilitate an independent project review and a financial project audit ofthe project since its inception.

 

O’Neill said NEC endorsed for the transfer ofthe Central City Development Project Funds currently parked inthe Central Provincial Government Special Project Trust Accountotothe Central City Project Trust Account previously held bythe Department of Finance.

 

Cabinet has also approverdthe endorsement of Central Governor Kila Haoda, as Chairman ofthe Central City Development Project Steering Committee.

 

Mr. O’Neill said Cabinet has taken note ofthe reimbursement of project funds valued at K5 million, which was given tothe Koiari landowners.

 

The Prime Ministersaid amendments will be made tothe current trust instrument ofthe Central City Trust Account.
