Naru disappointed on settlers

The Morobe Governor, Kelly Naru, has expressed disappointment towards settler’s takingthe law intotheir own hands.

 

He wants a zero tolerance approach by community lLeadersand authorities on violence in Lae.

“Violence has to come to a zero tolerance level, it doesn’t matter if it’s a state of origin related violence or election related violence, it must all come down,” says Naru.
 

The governor has been dealing withthese clashes in settlements aroundthe city for the last nine months. They have all been related to high consumption of homemade alcohol and marijuana.

 

“I am appealing tothe people concerned in taking ownership of this kind of situations and not to encourage this kind of activities,” Naru said.
 

Police are investigatingthe incident as an assault and murder case. Lae’ Metropolitan Superintendent Ivan Lakani says investigation is ongoing.

 

The Sepik youth was shot throughthe eye and dlied instantly after he trlied to save his brther who was assaulted by a mob.

 

The shooting happened hours afterthe State of Origin decider. Followingthe shooting, family members retaliated and torched several properties on five blocks belonging to Western Highlanders who have been blamed for the killing.

 

Meanwhile, community lLeadersare waiting for the Lae urban elections to finish beforethey sit-down for proper mediation.
