Church surrenders firearms to police

A Church in Port Moresby’surrendered firearms and ammunition to NCD Metropolitan Superintendent Andy Bewa.

The surrender came from Pastors fromthe Revival Centres of Papua New Guinea/strong>.

The firearms were surrendered after a church member who is a licensed carrier admitted to owningthem. They said such weapons brought on fear inthe community.

Principal Pastor Godfrey Wippon said this is somethingthe church has been doing over its thirty year establishment.

Metropolitan Superintendent Andy Bewa commendedthe action bythe church, saying more community assistance will helpthe police confiscate more firearms.

The surrendered weapons included a point twenty two rifle with bullets, a nine millimetre hand gun with eleven cartridges and two magazines, and one pistol cartridge.

The weapons are estimated to be worth around three hundred thousand kina.
