A Pastor in Tari-Pori district says farmers inthe district need markets to be developed for vegetable sales.
Mthew Kirago (pictured) has called on Exxon mobile to buy produce from local farmers who are being trained to plant a variety of vegetables.
The farmers have already harvested and sold vegetables atthe local market. They’ve made over two thousand three hundred kina inthe first harvest.
Nowthey want to extendtheir market tothe LNG Project site.
“We don’t want Exxon Mobil to go to Mt. Hagen and Goroka, Lae or Port Moresby to buy vegetables,they can come to us in Hulia LLG,” says Pastor Mthew Kirago.
The LNG Project is expected to bring spin off businesses for local communities.
The Fresh Produce Development Agency proposes thatthe people selltheir producethe project. They say it’should be ideal for both sides.
It also means Exxon Mobil can now get vegetables just attheir doorstep and save costs in transporting vegetables from as far as Mt. Hagen and Goroka.
Tari-Pori farmers saythey havethe capacity to supplythe LNG site. They’ve already begun talking with Exxon on how muchthey can buy.
“We needthe government and Exxon Mobil to provide us a market,” says farmer Jenny Mandika.
The Multi-billion kina project can buy vegetables from ther provinces ofthe highlands that are willing to sellthe quantity thatthey need. BetoTari farmers feelthey want to be given priority.
