Parliament has passed two new bills during Friday’s session; one onthe Criminal Code for People Smuggling and Trafficking in persons andthe ther onthe National Payments System.
The opposition also backedthe two bills.

Criminal Code for People Smuggling and TraffickingAll 86 members of parliament present in this session voted for the amendments tothe criminal code. It means an offender’s rights to freedom, inhuman treatmentoforced labour amongst thers will be restricted.Harsher penalties have been put in place to protect Papua New Guinea’s rights in public safety, public order and welfare.National Payment SystemTreasurer Don Polye also gotthe house’s full vote for to amendthe National Payment System. The amendment pavesthe way tothe introduction of an electronic banking.The Central Bank has been giventhe powers to promotethe new National Payment System.The bank will give or withdraw licenses to a private operator inthe country; it will formulate and adopt a national payments system policy in terms of bank fees amongst thers.Mr. Polye’saidthe new system seeks to promote accountability, efficiency and affordable banking for the people. He added that queues in banks will be a thing ofthe past.A national payments council will be established to oversee this mammoth task.
