Air Niugini have launchedthe construction of an eight-storey, 60 room residential staff tower.
The building is due for completion in 2015 and will be built at a cost of 80 million kina.
Those present to withnessthe ground breaking ceremony last Friday included, State Enterprise minister, Ben Micah and Managing Director ofIndependent Public Business Corporation, Washanta Kumarasiri.
The Chairman of Air Niugini Beard, Sir Fredrick Reiher commendedthe past and present management for this significant development.
“This construction is a significant development for Air Niugini. It comes at a very right time to markthe beginning of our celebrations of 40 years,” said Sir Reiher.
He said inthe long run this project will help reduce cost and improver on time performance.
“Construction of this residential tower will see significant reduction in expenditure, which is currently outsourced for accommodation for our pilots and crew. And, atthe same time,the proximity of this accommodation tothe airport will enable easy transportation which is all aimed at improving on time performance that has becomethe priority of this board, and also to provide a reliable schedule for our customers,” Sir Reiher said.
The Minister for state enterprise, acknowledged Air Niugini management for this decision.
The state ofthe art building will have modern facilities including, a café, a bar, a restaurantoand indoor and outdoor recreational facilities.
Matrix ConstructioPNG has been tasked to deliverthe project. The 60 room project will house pilots and cabin crews.
