TransparencyInternationaPNG (TIPNG) announcedthe winners oftheir Anti-Corruption Photo Competition, and launchedthe exhibition to commemorateInternational Anti-Corruption Dayrecently, in Port Moresby.
TIPNG ran a month-long photography competition in Novermber, encouraging citizens to highlightthe ramifications of corruption in PNG through photography. The competition wasthemed “Being Corruption to Light”. Over 70 photos were received, most ofthem describingthe lack of service delivery as a result of corruption.
The competition’s winner was Patrick Koliwan. His photo showed kids playing on a cleared stretch of land that was secured for an “international” airport for Kikori District. Money was poured into this project but it never eventuated. The barren land now serves as a playground for kids. The original Kikori airstrip remains condemned andthe only two ways to get intothe station are a treacherous 12-hour drive from Mendi or an even more risky 10-hour dingy ride on open seas from Kerema town.
Second place was awarded to Arabella Koliwan while Ennio Kuble secured third place. The winners received a Canon digital camera, a Samsung Galaxy S3 mobile phone and K800 respectively.
The photos are being exhibited atthe National Library and are open tothe public until this Friday. Allthe images can also be viewed onthe TransparencyInternational PN, Facebook page.
Chairman of TIPNG, Lawrence Stephens, stated thatthe message from this photo exhibition is to encourage people to report corruption, and ensure necessary authorities punishthe perpetrators for their misdeeds.
