New Juvenile Centre in Popondetta

Chief Secretary Manasupe Zurenuoc officially openedthe new Juvenile Center yesterday. The Center will changethe way matters relating to juvenile delinquency are dealt with inthe province.

Provincial Administrator Owen Awaita says,there have been concerns that juveniles who have committed crimes were not treated fairly. He saysthey were forced, inthe pastoto be kept withthe adults inthe only police cell in Popondetta town.

 

The center is funded bythe national government throughthe Department of Justice and Attorney General.

 

The cell has been condemned bythe provincial health Authority but is still in use. Provincial Police Commander, ChiefInspector Jacob Singura, admitted tothe failed state ofthe cell.

 

Bet withthe new Juvenile Center this will greatly easethe burden in separating juveniles from adults.

 

He says, crimes among juveniles have increased, and appealed tothe community to work closely withthe police to curb this trend.

 

Chief Secretary, Manasupe Zurenuoc, was full of praise for the Department of Justice and Attorney General for implementingthe program. He challenged ther government departments to meetthe standards set bythe department of Justice and Attorney General in delivering services tothe people.

 

The Juvenile Center is funded at a cost of K800, 000 and is expected to be completed by next year.
