A Heroes Welcome For Commonwealth Gold Medallists

Dika Toua and Steven Kari were greeted by loud cheers as hundreds of supporters and fans turned up in droves to catch a glimpse of the 2 gold medalists.

Escorted by Sport Minister Justin Tkachenko and NCD Governor Powes Parkop, the two were given a true heroes’ welcome.

Hundreds turned up in the reds, blacks and golds of the national flag to welcome PNG’s 2014 Commonwealth Games gold medallists.

Many waited in the sun for a number of hours but showed no signs of impatience as they eventually caught sight of the two.

In what had been described by Sport Minister Justin Tkachenko as the most successful stint to date, the athletes were clearly fatigued after the long flight home but greeted the onlookers with obvious delight.

Adults and children alike, many of whom were from the pair’s home village, crowded near the exit and had to be led back by security personnel trying to make way for the entourage to depart.

Halting traffic and amidst the cacophony of vehicle horns, Steven and Dika were carried on the backs of the utes to be welcomed later on in their home village of Hanuabada on the outskirts of the nation’s capital.
