Women Complete Training In Basic Sewing Skills

A total of 18 mothers from Moresby's North East electorate graduated with basic skills in sewing.

This group of mothers completed 8 weeks of training at the Wildlife Pentecostal Assemblies World Apostolic Church ground.

A graduation on Friday marked the completion of the first stage of their training.

The mothers in and around the Wildlife area in Moresby North East electorate have a reason to smile as the training will help them sustain their livelihoods and support their families.

All those who have gone through the training can now sew household materials like bed covers, pillowcases and even clothes.

Aina Nii, a former vocational trainer, has been working with this group for the past 2 months, teaching them the basics of sewing.

To empower the mothers to use their skills, the district, under the leadership of Member Labi Amaiu, has put money aside from the district funds for the purchase of a sewing machine for each of the graduates.

Member Amaiu and the district administrator were guests at the graduation yesterday.

Mr Amaiu told those gathered that his administration is looking seriously at empowering unskilled mothers and fathers in settlements.

He also made a pledge to find a suitable market for mothers to sell their products, further promising mothers in his electorate a better training centre in the future.

The training centre is an initiative of the Pentecostal Assemblies World Apostolic Church and a fee of K100 stands for those interested in attaining basic skills in sewing.

With the passing out of the first batch, the centre is now ready to register new intakes.
