Rising Sea Affects Road

Rising sea level is becoming a reality in many coastal areas in PNG.

Its visible impact is affecting people’s livelihood and psychical infrastructures.

Its feared many infrastructures along the coast, including roads and bridges will be submerged under water, as is the case with Moem road in Wewak.

This road leading into Moem Army Barracks in East Sepik province is deteriorating as a result of rising sea level.

Sea erosion is exposing compacted gravel about a meter deep. On a portion of the Moem road, one lane  has already eaten away by erosion.

Vehicles are now using the other lane and the small gap towards the swamp.

The road was built in the early 1960s by Australian Engineering battalion.

Department of Trade, Commerce and Industry, Director General, Trade Division, Ambassador Max Rai, who grew up in this area was appalled by the destruction.

He is appealing to the Government to step in and build sea walls to prevent the sea from destroying the coastline.

Similar situations can be seen in many coastal communities in PNG, and this is having a big impact on our road infrastructures.
