National Fisheries Authority Address Yellow Card Status

Papua New Guinea has been given a yellow card by the European Union to improve the standard of fishing in the country. The National Fisheries Authority has embarked on addressing it.

This means the National Fisheries Authority has the mandated responsibility to meet EU-standard requirements to ensure fishing operators do not over-fish.

One of the long-term areas to improve standards has been the introduction of basic fisheries training at technical vocational training centres.

In an interview with EM TV this morning, Managing Director for the National Fisheries Authority, John Kasu, emphasised that training to produce highly-skilled manpower in the fisheries industry will subsequently lead to improved, quality fishing.

Out of all eight business units of the NFA, the Fisheries College in Kavieng receives K400, 000 in support of basic fisheries training at technical vocational training centres in maritime provinces.

Mr Kasu says it’s a start with hopes that development partners will chip in to support the technical vocational training centres; a small but giant leap forward in helping PNG move from a yellow card nation to a red one, ultimately making our exports marketable in the international arena.
