Second Arrest Attempt For Vaki

Members of the Fraud and Anti-Corruption Directorate of the Royal PNG Constabulary made another attempt to arrest and charge the Acting Police Commissioner Geoffrey Vaki at the Police Headquarters late yesterday afternoon.

There was a near confrontation between the arresting party and other members of the force.

Vaki asked policemen and women to accept his appointment and work together to restore the integrity of the force.

After the court handed down its ruling yesterday, refusing the application by the Prime Minister who sought interim restraining’Orders to stay the warrant of arrest, five members of the Police Fraud Squad made another attempt to arrest the acting Police Commissioner, Geoffrey Vaki.

Vaki was earlier arrested and charged by the same members for misconduct in office and perverting the course of justice.

Yesterday’s attempt to arrest him was believed to be for conspiracy.

While the arrest did not go ahead as planned, Vaki met with heads of the fraud squad and said an amicable solution was reached last night.

He said he was appointed by NEC and the rank and file of the police force should accept this fact and start to work with him.

It is understood that high powered guns were released to members of the force when the near confrontation took place but were returned when the situation calmed down.

Some members of the police force urged their colleagues to respect the NEC decision and carry out their constitutional duties as policemen and women instead of taking sides.
