“DION JOINS PNC”Ruth Rungula

 

Deputy Prime Minister and the deputy leader of Triumph, Heritage and Empowerment Party in the Niugini Islands region, Leo Dion, has tendered his resignation from T.H.E. Party and joined Prime Minister Peter O’Neill’s People’s National Congress.

 

Prime Minister O&rsquO’Neill welcomed him to his party today, which brings PNC party members numbers to 57.

 

Grand Chief Dion spoke of events of the last few months including where party leader Don Polye, who has been in the middle benches since his sacking, made continuous criticisms of the government.

 

Dion said it was painful and awkward for him to sit as deputy Prime Minister in government and cop criticism and attacks from Polye when T.H.E. party is a part of government.

He said such behavior is not part of the Westminster system of government and he decided to resign from T.H.E. party.

 


 

“PNG REPRESENTED IN END TO SEXUAL VIOLENCE SUMMIT” – Bernadette Efi

 

Minister for Foreign Affairs and Immigration, Rimbink Pato, today briefed the National Executive Council of his attendance at the Global Summit to End Sexual Violence in Conflict in London last month.

Mr. Pato said Papua New Guinea’s attendance at the summit provided an opportunity to share and listen to views on countering devastating incidences of predation and sexual violence around the world. At the Summit, the Papua New Guinea Foreign Minister signed the declaration supporting the End to Sexual Violence in Conflict. 

 

The Summit was attended by other Foreign Ministers, including John Kerry from the United States, Marty Natalegawa from Indonesia and representatives from Africa, the Americas and Europe who showed support for the Global Summit initiative to end this atrocious crime.

 


 

“CENTRAL MILNE BAY MOU”Bernadette Efi

 

A ‘Order agreement was signed between Central and Milne Bay provinces recently at the Gogosiba ‘Order patrol post, to bring effective delivery of basic goods and services to the people on both sides.

The MOU signing ceremony was between Central Governor Kila Haoda, Milne Bay Governor Titus Philemon and Alotau MP and Minister for National Planning & Monitoring, Charles Abel. The Central-Milne Bay agreement now paves the way for joint cooperation to funding and administration of the Gogosiba ‘Order patrol post.

This includes projects such as funding of roads from Nube to Magarida and Agaun, the upgrading of Magarida airstrip and a jetty and VHF radio antenna to be co-sited with Telikom facilities at Mt. Strong. Governor Haoda committed K10, 000 to an elementary school and presented K50, 000 to the victims of Cyclone Ita in Milne Bay province.

 


 

“SECOND CHANCE”Sylvester Gawi

 

A Local Level Government President in Lae is providing training avenues for school dropouts as the way forward in minimizing law and’Order and unemployment.
Ahi LLG president, Sam Agi, is calling on for the district and provincial governMen’s to support this initiative in developing young people.
This follows Saturday’s graduation of sixty men and women from his LLG with certificates in operating heavy plant and equipment. 

 


 

“MIOKS WIN”­ – Sylvester Gawi

 

Enga Mioks recorded a convincing win over cellar dwellers Mendi Muruks 28 points to 12 in yesterday’s Digicel cup match in Lae. The Engan boys proved their worth by scoring five tries to Muruks’ two tries to cling to the third spot. EM TV Lae’s Sylvester Gawi has the round-up of the game.

 


 

“RECALL PARLIAMENT” Scott Waide

 

Deputy Opposition Leader, Sam Basil, has called on the speaker of parliament, Theo Zurenuoc, to recall house. Parliament was adjourned last month for two months, with members citing delays to constitutional amendMen’s and bills relating to the Sovereign Wealth Funds as primary reasons. Basil said issues relating to the current instability have to be discussed so that pressure is eased.

 


 

“BSP ASSISTS CITY MISSION”Theckla Gunga

 

In appreciation of City Mission’s work in the country, BSP presented a cheque of K5, 000 to City Mission for a financial boost. City Mission has been providing training to destitute boys in PNG for twenty years now. The presentation is part of BSP’s annual support to the charity organization. The money will be directed to City Mission’s positive programs that include physical, emotional and spiritual help.

The programs are directed at developing skills in young people so they can become more self-reliant.

 


 

“PACMAS TRAINING”Mickey Kavera

 

More than 16 journalists from the Pacific are currently attending an investigative journalism training course in Tonga. The 3-day training course began today and will end on Wednesday. It is funded by the Pacific Media Assistance Scheme or PACMAS. Training Coordinator Sharon Davis urged participants to be proactive in investigative journalism.
She said more needs to be done on investigative journalism in the region and journalists must take the lead. Davis said journalists are becoming too complacent on investigative stories.

Investigative journalism is the key to keeping those in authority accountable and journalists owe it to the public.

Public interest must be at the centre of a journalist’s heart in’Order to expose issues affecting the society.
