Kairuku Hiri Ward Councillors Training

A pilot project in the Kairuku Hiri electorate of Central Province is proving to help ward councillors in decision making.

A program funded by the World Bank and supported by the district aims to train ward councillors draw up development plans.

 

Six wards in the districts completed the 2nd phase of the training last Friday.

 

The second phase of the week-long training held at Nabuapaka village in the Kairuku district, was concluded last Friday.

 

Ward councillors from 6 wards out of the 40 wards in the Kairuku Hiri electorate, attended the training.

 

An initiative of the World Bank, the program was co-funded with forthy one thousand kina from District Services Improvement Program funds.

 

This program is aimed at developing ward councillors to plan development programs, to utilise the five hundred thousand kina under the Local Level Government Services Improvement Program funds.

 

Member for Kairuku Hiri, Peter Isoaimo, visited the training venue to close the week-long training.

 

Mr. Isoaimo commended the World Bank for facilitating the training saying, the ward profiles drawn from this will then be incorporated into the district’s 5 year plan.

 

He said these plans will be adopted by the LLG plans as guidelines for service delivery into each ward.

 

Participants in the training expressed satisfaction, however, requested for further funding to complete the third and final stage of the program, which focuses on project proposals and book keeping.

 

The member acknowledged the importance of the training, noting that the ward councillors represent the bulk of the population in the districts.
