POM Summer Squash Competition

The Port Moresby Summer Squash Competition commenced this week, welcoming a number of familiar faces.

This is the first local competition since the WSF Ambassadorial Program, held in the Nation’s capital earlier this year.

After an impressive indication of 400 interested children, it is hoped that local competitions as such will contribute to the growth and development of the dormant sport.

The 2014 Port Moresby Squash Summer Competition at the Aviat Club has officially kicked off.

The competition comes in handy as it prepares our local squash talents with some game time, in time for the second WSF Ambassadorial Program in September, during which international players will return to the shores of Papua New Guinea to have off-season matches with athletes of the PNG Squash Federation.

The current summer competition is no stranger to our fellow squash superstars over in Glasgow, with Team 1 consisting of the Morove family, led by up and coming youngster, Robin Morove, and Sheila Morove who is yet to compete at the Commonwealth Games.

While the other teams are also made up of senior squash veterans, Tim Kriebiesch, Kerry Walsh and Rob Collocot, adding some experience to the competition.

The competition is set to run through till October, in which the WSF International Squash Guests will be able to observe and assess our local squash talent.

Konio Vai of the PNG Squash Federation encourages the youth from far and wide to get involved with the sport and join them on the journey to reviving the sport’s identity.
