World Population Day

The theme for World Population Day is "Investing in Young People and back home", the message to promote discipline and proper behavior amongst youth, was emphasized by Transport Minister, Malakai Tabar.

Minister Tabar was the former Chairman of the Special Parliamentary Committee on Population Development.

Currently, there are 1.8 billion people in the world and people aged between 10 to 24 make one quarter of the world’s population.

Investing in young people by promoting healthy habits and ensuring education and employment opportunities among others, will improve the lives of future generation.

Today’s 1.8 billion people are shaping social and economic realities, yet too many people continue to live in poverty, inequality contributing to the ever increasing gap of those who have, and the have nots, which subsequently resulting in crime.

Minister Tabar said prior to taking up his portfolio as Transport Minister, he asked the United Nations Population Fund to remain with the Special Parliamentary Committee on Population Development as a Member.

He has been advocating on issues relating to World Population Development at International conferences for the last five years.

Minister Tabar told those who gathered that his District is one of the fastest growing populations in the country, and with this comes the need to enforce good discipline at home.

Together with United Nations Population Fund, the government of the day has been encouraged to provide opportunities for its populace to ensure avenues are available for young people in this day and age.
