PNG Stoma Association Receives Boost From Muruks

PRK Mendi Muruks have once again assisted the PNG STOMA Association, an NGO that supports people suffering with cancer of the colon.

Currently, there is only one specialized STOMA therapy nurse for the 7 million Papua New Guineans.

Last year, PRK Mendi Muruks held their major fundraiser at Dynasty Restaurant where they auctioned a Queensland Maroon’s jersey.

The cheque of K80, 000 was presented to the President of STOMA Association today.

Following her experience, Mrs Janet Yaki, a survivor of Cancer of the Colon, established the PNG STOMA Association to help people suffering from this condition. She commended the Minister for Works and Imbongu MP, Francis Awesa for being the highest bidder at the auction.

Minister Awesa expressed gratitude at the work of STOMA Association led by Mrs Yaki and was happy that a premier rugby league team in the Digicel Cup, PRK Mendi Muruks was supporting the worthy cause.

PRK Mendi Muruks Board led by Pastor Issac Joseph said this is not the first time for the club to support the cause and it won’t be the last.

STOMA Association will use the funds to purchase Ostomy supplies (special bags for people living with stoma) or for this special group of people, some of whom are being treated at Mendi Hospital.

One immediate problem for authorities to address is the lack of health facilities and specialized workers to treat and assist patients with STOMA at most of the hospitals throughout the country.
