Expat General Manager assaults local staff

A PNG local staff of Monier Ltd in Port Moresby was assaulted by the companies General Manager, an expatriate originally from Australia.

Local residents are angered by the actions when learning of the incident on the popular social media Facebook group Sharp Talk.

It was reported on Sharp Talk that the employee was assaulted by his General Manager who accused the elderly employee of being intoxicated with beating.

Sources say the man (employee) was drowsy from lack of sleep, but his Manager suspected otherwise.

It also reported that a compensation payment was made by the Manager, however; local residents including Sharp Talk members have urged the immigration and labour department to intervene on the matter as it was a breach of the labour laws in this country, especially regarding a foreigner not having respect for the indigenous citizens of Papua New Guinea.

It is believed the Immigrations and Labour Department have been informed about the issue and with a statement to be released early next week. – AP
