One of the abiding myths of the attacks on the Twin Towers is that other than those that died, there were very few casualties. Nothing could be further from the truth. On 9/11 few inside the World Trade Centre escaped unharmed. Thousands of evacuating office workers, innocent bystanders and emergency responders were burned, crushed, impaled, concussed, lacerated, buried, choked, blinded or nearly drowned. Yet almost all lived to tell the tale.
When the first plane hit the Twin Towers, the New York emergency units sprung into action saving thousands of lives despite the hardest of circumstances. Quick-response Triage centres were under threat from collapse as they were positioned so close to the towers and many of the injured had to be ferried across the Hudson river to safety. This film looks at the incredible response from the medical professionals on the ground as the horror unfolded and also at the impact their service had on so many people that day.
