Madang-Bogia: Situation Tense After Dormitory Burning

By Rachael Shisei – EM TV, Madang

The situation is still tense in the Bogia District of Madang, following the burning down of a girl’s dormitory of the Holy Rosary High School, in the area on Friday.

This has led to drivers and passengers taking extra precaution on their journeys, when travelling on the Madang-Bogia Highway.

Most passengers said they had to get to town to get much needed necessities, regardless of the current situation.

Their necessities meant they had to get on vehicles willing to travel to and from town.

Some passengers are currently stranded and cannot get back to their home at the Bogia Station. One of the main reasons is because they were overloaded to get to town, and on return, have additional cargos with them. Only those who’ve arrived earlier are secured with a space on the PMV’s.

The Provincial Police Commander, Sylvestor Kalaut, has also confirmed that the tension is still there, despite road blocks being removed and the situation calmed, by his officers.

The source of the fight eventuated between students of Bogia and Manam last Friday, with police arriving as early as Saturday morning to calm the tension.

PPC Kalaut said police met with the community leaders regarding the situation, and have returned as of yesterday with the assurance that the leaders can manage.

The PPC also added that the tension of the fight may also have built up overtime, as a result of land dispute between the two groups, regarding the resettling of the Manam Islanders on Bogia.
