Joint Partnership Sees Police Infrastructure Development

By Theckla Gunga – EM TV News, Port Moresby

The complete refurbishment of the Badilli Police Station is a positive step which the PNG-Australian Policing Partnership Program has undertaken to improve the police infrastructure in Papua New Guinea.

The refurbishment comes at a time the police force is facing serious challenges with its building infrastructure.

The building was officially launched yesterday but will not be occupied until approval is given from the police hierarchy.

Once the approval to occupy the building is given, the station will house the Traffic, Criminal Investigation Unit and Prosecution Divisions.

It will be run just like the provincial police, where all units operate from the same police station.

In an off camera interview with NCD Divisional Commander, Sylvester Kalaut, the Assistant Commissioner said the idea to include the three police units at Badilli is to spread the police services across the city.

Currently, all investigations and prosecutions are conducted at the Boroko Police Station and that often becomes over crowed.

Badilli has over 60 polices officers. Its an area of operations which includes Badilli to Kaugere, Sabama and the Two Mile residential area.

The refurbished Badilli Station is predicted to boost the moral of police officers and will give them something to be proud of.
