Sustainable Water Systems to Be Introduced

by Theckla Gunga – EM TV News, Port Moresby

Water PNG and Eda Ranu are looking at introducing sustainable water systems that will improve the quality of water supply particularly in rural areas.

In the 8th Pacific Water and Wastewater Conference to be held in Port Moresby, both water utility bodies will be targeting technologies that will have water sustainability.

The conference is scheduled for September and will involve state ministers from over 15 Pacific Nations.

With the existing challenges, Water PNG and Eda Ranu plan to use the September Conference as an information gathering avenue to see which technology will be applicable in the different parts of Papua New Guinea.

The Water Bodies have also called on Members of Parliament to support them finically when implementing these technologies in their districts.

In a joint meeting between the two water suppliers this morning, both parties want to see that quality water is supplied to all consumers mainly in remote areas.

General Manager for Water PNG’s Engineering and Major Projects Department, Siboa Vavia, highlighted that the government has failed to supply safe water and proper sanitation service to at least 50 per cent of the total PNG’s population as required by the 2015 National Millennium Development Goal.

Water Sustainability and Quality remains two of the major challenges for Water PNG and Eda Ranu.

In major towns where water is supplied either by Water PNG or Eda Ranu through the different conversion treatments, there is some form of water sustainability.

However, in rural areas where water supplies are installed by non-governmental organisations or private bodies, water sustainability cannot be guaranteed.
