EU Happy With Surveillance Progress of Illegal Fishing In PNG

by Jack Lapauve Jr – EM TV, Port Moresby

The European Union is happy with the current progress of monitoring PNG waters on illegal tuna fishing.

Prime Minister Peter O’Neill was briefed on this when visiting Europe recently.

Mr O’Neill said the yellow flag for PNG will be pulled down if we maintain the monitoring of our waters.

The Prime Minister said PNG officials and the European Union team are working closely to better the surveillance and monitoring of PNG waters.

Mr O’Neill said a lack of capacity and technology has placed PNG in an awkward position, thus illegal fishing is happening in front of our noses.

He added that with the yellow flag being raised by the European Union, PNG has been pushed to tighten surveillance measures on our waters.

O’Neill said progress has been made and the European Union is aware of what really is happening on the ground.

The Prime Minister is confident more progress will be made regarding the surveillance efforts and the EU will make changes by removing the yellow flag.
