The move made by both Finschafen MP and Speaker, Theo Zurenuoc, and Kundiawa-Gembogl MP Tobias Kulang to the ruling People’s National Congress Party, has shocked the Opposition. Deputy Opposition Leader Sam Basil said the Zurenuoc’s defection from the People’s Progress Party to Peoples National Congress Party is against the Alotau Accord, describing it as illegal.
On good governance, Basil said MPs must not serve their own interests but that of the people. He called on coalition parties to disengage themselves from the ruling government.
An angry Opposition Leader, Don Polye said the People’s National Congress didn’t respect the Alotau Accord. He called on the Speaker to maintain neutrality at all times.
Speaker Theo Zurenuoc joined the Peoples National Congress on Wednesday because he says he believed in the stability and trust of the O’Neill-Dion government. The Prime Minister’s party now has 60 members.
