By Eric Haurupma – EM TV, Port Moresby

The Salvation Army’s ‘2015 Red Shield Appeal’ fundraising event, held in Port Moresby today.

This is part of Salvation Army’s dedicated support and ongoing commitment towards addressing issues of HIV and AIDS, gender base violence and child abuse.

At the 2015 Red Shield Appeal fundraising today, over three hundred and eighty thousand Kina was raised to carry out community projects.

Red Shield Advisory Board Chairman, Mark Baker, said this contribution will go towards addressing issues of HIV and AIDS, and addressing issues of child abuse and gender base violence.

There is a great need to address these issues; with major challenges in there being no safe houses for counselling, and resource centres for survivors.

Wife of the prime minister, Lynda Babao-O’Neill said the prevalence of these issues has posed a vulnerable threat for the people.

The Salvation Army has played an active role in providing health services, educational training and awareness programs to provide awareness, detect and support patients living with HIV and AIDS.

The organisation also assists with resource centres to cater for homeless children, and carrying out counselling to gender base violence.
