National Soccer League Plans Big for 2016

by Lorraine Genia – EM TV Sport, Port Moresby

The National Soccer League (NSL) will be a different league of competition, come 2016.

PNG Football Association President David Chung made clear the NSL requirements for next year and gave indications to the implications if teams fail to comply.

Once this change becomes effective, the NSL will be the only structured and well managed semi-professional competition in the country.

The NSL has certainly grown and developed over the years, this year being one of the better years of competition. David Chung has been adamant on development for the betterment of the game and as soon as the season for 2015 ends, a new chapter begins for the soccer fraternity.

This means that all teams will have to meet prerequisites and have a strong foundation in place to ensure the club is sustainable and will remain in the NSL from here on. If clubs fail to comply with these requirements, they will be forced to withdraw.

However, Chung says in order for developments to proceed, processes and structures must be implemented.

Clubs are still struggling with funding and grounds, and these changes will certainly affect participation in the competition in coming years.
