PNG Boxers still in Training

by Godwin Eki – EM TV Sport, Port Moresby

Papua New Guinean boxers have made good use of the Go for Gold program, by attending overseas training camps, and getting into the ring with international fighters.

Since arriving back from Brisbane last week, the team went on break and are now back to training.

According to President John Avira, they have not only travelled overseas, but they have gained much needed skills from their international coach, Allan Nicolson Jnr.

They said the success of his work showed in them winning 7 out of 8 fights, and they have thanked him for his support and training regime.

The athletes said, although they have been shown the different types of skills and techniques, they still need more training, and more international boxing competition, to gain more confidence in themselves, prior to the Pacific Games.

The team leaves on the 16th and 17th of April, for their three-week training camp in Tabubil, accompanied by Allan Nicolson Jnr himself, who arrives from Brisbane before departing for Tabubil.

It is in Tabubil, where the athletes will work on their weights, fitness levels, boxing school training and basic sparring techniques.

Straight after the training camp in Tabubil, the team will head back to Port Moresby for a few days break, to prepare for their next trip, which is to Manila in the Philippines to attend their next international boxing competition.
