Building HR capacity for the Arawa Health Centre

By Fabian Hakalits – EM TV, Port Moresby

Building human resource capacity for the Arawa Health Centre, in terms of nursing staff, is vital during this transition period.

Resident Doctor, Joe Vilosi, announced that the Arawa Nursing School in the Autonomous Region of Bougainville will be revived to cater for this exercise.

Since the Arawa Health Centre resumed its first surgical operations in 2013, there’s been a great demand for more nursing staff.

With more patients admitted to the health centre and referral cases from outer districts in the autonomous region, the emphasis is now on the Bougainville Health Department to increase nurses’ number.

Recently the health centre lost two of its nurses, and is currently understaffed.

These issues have pushed for immediate and appropriate actions to revive the once, premier school of nursing in Papua New Guinea.

This has drawn support from political bureaucrats, to business houses, in the former mining township of Arawa.

The Arawa School of Nursing infrastructure will be rebuilt this year, with the first intake in 2016.

Dr Vilosi says the institution will train its own nurses, due to limited spaces in other nursing colleges.

Training nurses will be the first priority, before any other infrastructure development takes place.
