PNG’s Under 20 Women’s team is expected to trim down the Kiwis’ to make it into the FIFA U 20 Women’s World Cup.
The first block to break is the Oceanic Football Confederation U-20 Women’s Championship which is scheduled from 18th to 22nd of February 2014 in New Zealand.
The team looks ripe with PNG sprint sensation, Mae Koime on board as the National Strength and Conditioning Trainer.
The final selected 20 players were put into good use at the PNG Football Association Academy in Lae, Morobe province.
The five day camp was worth it as they geared up for the Oceania Football Confederation U-20 Women’s Championship in Mangere Central Park in Auckland, New Zealand.
The championship is a chance for the girls to secure a spot in the 2015 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Canada.
The four teams, who have already qualified for the championship, include defending champs New Zealand, who will be out to retain and bury the title in their home- soil.
Tonga and Vanuatu will come in style, bringing the Pacific flavor as they go head to head in the championship.
The opening match will see our girls battle it out with Tonga.
‘The game will go true to form’ when PNG take on New Zealand in the final match of the round robin competition.
Both teams were the 2011 top contenders and no doubt will be in for a bitter showdown.
The team comprises of youth and experience, and is confident of doing well in the OFC World Cup Qualifier, says assistant coach Hans Gewebing.
The team will depart on the 9th of February, a week prior to the tournament.
