Patel Presents K60 000 to Buk Bilong Pikinini

It is now possible for small children from Tatana Island, outside Port Moresby, to read and practice basic literacy in their village.

Thanks to the “Buk Bilong Pikinini” Organisation, the Switzerland Embassy in Australia, and the C-P-L Group of Companies, for their support in building and operating a library for the children.

Today, City Pharmacy Limited Group Chairman, Mahesh Patel, made a contribution of K60, 000 to show his support for the project.

Before presenting the cheque worth K60, 000 to “Buk Bilong Pikinini” Executive Officer Joanne Grenenger, Mr Patel said it’s a sense of obligation to support such organizations.

The donation was personal and Mr Patel encourages other to support the “Buk Bilong Pikinini” program as well.

Head Librarian Vagi Kariko, said over 100 children of ages four to six, have already registered.

She said two hours of lessons will be taught every day for each of the three age groups.

Varo Avi, a grandmother, said she believes the library will equip their children with reading skill before they enter elementary education.

Apart from Buk Bilong Pikinini and other libraries in Port Moresby and other regional centres, this was the first in the Motu- Koitabu area.

“Buk Bilong Pikinini” is a Non-for-Profit Organization that establishes small children’s libraries and introduces them to read.
