Police Wives Express Complaints over Deteriorating State of Barracks Houses

by Bethanie Harriman – EM TV News, Lae

The wives of police officers living in the Madang barracks are refusing to speak out about the deteriorating conditions of their homes.

They say it isn’t the first time people have brought cameras into the barracks to capture how they live.

The wife of a senior constable, Marieatha Saui, says on numerous occasions they have spoken out.

“This is the last time we are talking to the media and it won’t be happening again,” says Marietha.

The wives of the Policemen show their rundown houses; inside are problems they have already brought to the attention of the authorities in the last two years including the deteriorating state of their kitchen, toilets and showers.

Their housing continues to crumble and most have been condemned and deemed unfit to live in, but despite this the families have been maintaining what they can.

Senior Constable Michael Jingamp’s family has been living here for over ten years.

He has been a Police Officer for the past 23 years.

“The government has to do something for Police Officers to live and carry out their jobs,” says Senior Constable Jingamp.
