Australian Foreign Minister Reaffirms Commitment To Angau

Australia’s Foreign Minister, Julie Bishop, today visited Lae’s Angau Hospital to see where work on the hospital’s upgrade will begin.

Australia will be co-funding the K500 million improvement.

One of the first tasks will be to remove old building materials that contain asbestos.

Hospital CEO, Dr. Polapai Chalau, says special attention is being given to the removal of asbestos.

Julie bishop, who arrived in Lae late morning, met with the board and management of the Angau hospital. She was taken on tour through the old part of the hospital. Then to the newer Gware wing which is currently being repainted.

As part of the Manus Asylum Centre deal, Angau is being given a massive facelift which will cost both governments half a billion kina.

The design will cost about K70 million. It’s about the same amount that was proposed by the Angau hospital board and management and rejected by the National Government.

Staff training will also be addressed in the upgrade. Both governments agree that this will be of high priority.

This is Julie Bishop’s first visit to as Foreign Minister. Like all visits by Australian dignitaries, this visit is also about strengthening relationships.
