Illiteracy is one major reason that causes difficulty for many uneducated Papua New Guineans to understand basic instructions.
Many of this people are now finding it hard to cope with the current changes and developments taking place in the country.
These people are now seeing the importance of education, and many have turned up to attend Adult Literacy training.
The Anglicare, Port Moresby Centre, is one organization that provides Adult Literacy Training for illiterate people.
People normally think that this training is for elderly people, but interestingly, youths were amongst those that attended the training.
Anglicare Port Moresby Centre, Literacy Coordinator, Imelda Saka, explained that they have four levels of classes, and three different age categories.
Mrs Saka said many of the students are Street vendors, Security Guards, shop assistants and house wives.
She said some of them do not know how to use the Automated Teller Machine and change money.
The students were taught basic Phonics, Math, English and Life Skill training.
Rose Wak, a 42 year old mother form Western Highlands, said she left school more than 32 years, and this training has helped her to read and write.
This Adult Literacy Program was funded through AusAID’s – Strongim Pipol Strongim Nation initiative.
Registration is only K20, and is open to anyone.
