Kari Prepares For Gold Medal

Junior Men’s Commonwealth Weightlifting record holder, Steven Kari, will not settle for anything less than a Gold Medal at the Commonwealth Games.

Entering his fifth year at the Oceania institute of weightlifting in New Caledonia, under the guidance of veteran and former Australian Head Coach, Paul Coffa, Kari has his heart set on the prize.

1765 miles from home, PNG’s very own weightlifting champion, Steven Kari has called New Caledonia home for almost 5 years.

The headquarters of the Oceania weightlifting federation is situated in the heart of New Caledonia on the island city of Mondor.

The facility is home to over 20 Pacific regions, catering for weightlifters from 10 different countries; Papua New Guinea, Tonga, and Samoa just to name a few, who lack the luxury of proper training facilities.

While Paul Coffa maintains the workload of changing the profile of weightlifting across the Pacific, Kari has taken upon himself the responsibility of uplifting the face of weightlifting in Papua New Guinea, with pure determination.

Kari who finished 15th at the 2012 Summer Olympics, and won Gold at the 2011 Pacific Games, also holds the title as Gold Medalist and weightlifting champion for the Junior Men’s Commonwealth Games.

While under the training and guidance of expert coach, Paul Coffa, Kari’s one immediate vision is involving the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow with the mindset of Gold being his only exception.
