While Port Moresby is gearing up to host the biggest sporting event in the Pacific next year, Melanesian Spearhead Group is also creating a pathway for sports in their region.
Sports Committees from four of the five Melanesian countries held a fruitful two day symposium in Port Moresby.
The issues were centered on the Inaugural Melanesian Games, and how to get the youth involved.
This sports committee is from the third Melanesians Spearhead Group, met in Port Moresby over the weekend.
Delegates from New Caledonia, Vanuatu, Fiji and Papua New Guinea attended while Solomon Islands pulled out at the last minute.
It was more of a problem solving symposium as delegates discussed and shared ideas of ways to steer youth away from criminal activity, but rather giving them hope and opportunities to respire further in life.
Papua New Guinea known as the sleeping giant in sports, took the initiative to host the meeting, as acting CEO of PNG Sports Foundation, Peter Tsiamalili Junior, believes the country has the potential to administratively set the platform for success.
The outcome of the meeting now paves a way for the inauguration of the Melanesian Games.
The concept of the Melanesian Youth Games is to give the younger generations an opportunity to excel and become better citizens of the Melanesian society.
