PM’s Warrant Of Arrest On Hold By Court Order

The warrant of arrest for Prime Minister Peter O’Neill has been put on hold by a court order.

This comes after lawyer representing Mr O’Neill, Tiffany Twivey, filed a petition for a stay order late last night at the court registry.

The matter was heard in the National Court this morning.

The warrant of arrest served by the National Fraud and Anti-Corruption Directorate for Prime Minister Peter O’Neill has stirred great anxiety and public attention in the last 48 hours.

This was evident when a fully-packed court room convened this morning at the National Court House.

The stay order filed last night by lawyer Twivey to prevent Mr. O’Neill’s arrest was upheld by Justice Ere Kariko on the grounds that lawyers representing Mr. O’Neill are to be given ample time to respond to an affidavit filed this morning by Task Force Sweep Chairman, Sam Koim.

However, in-house Police lawyer Nicholas Miviri questioned the impartiality in law on proceedings and if there is a special amendment for Mr. O’Neill to stop police in carrying out its constitutional duties.

The case has been adjourned to 9:30am tomorrow.

Meanwhile, Justice Kariko has given orders for police to refrain from taking any further action against the Prime Minister and has directed the police top hierarchy not to interfere with police officers directly involved in investigating Mr. O’Neill.

The warrant of arrest was served to Mr. O’Neill after new evidence was given to the Task Force Sweep Team.
