The collapse of Miye Bridge along the Madang- Lae highway has made it impassable for neither light vehicles nor heavy trucks, forcing commuters to carry their items across the river to continue their journey.
Also affected are business houses in Madang who rely heavily on road to transport commodities from Lae.
To ensure the speedy restoration of the bridge, Kurumbukari (KBK) Mine of Ramu NiCo Management (MCC) Ltd assisted the Madang Provincial Works Department (MWD) to restore a temporary bridge.
Executive Deputy General Manager of KBK Mine, Mr. Meng Deyong, said the aim is to erect a temporary bridge so necessary goods and services can flow in to the Province.
It is understood the Department of Works in Madang is at the site to assess the situation.
Meanwhile, the continuous heavy downpour experienced in the area saw many worsening subsidence between the Usino-Madang highway section posing real threat to normal flow of goods and services.
